inctures, or extracts, are a convenient and effective way to administer herbal remedies. They're concentrated and portable, and they generally last several years. I use two media for extraction: alcohol and glycerin (the finished product of which is called a glycerite).

Alcohol tinctures are usually the most potent and effective. They can be taken in juice or water. If you cannot or do not want to ingest the alcohol, you can add the tincture to a few ounces of steaming water, and let it sit for about 10 minutes before drinking it. The steam will evaporate most of the alcohol. For children or adults who cannot take alcohol tinctures, glycerites are a good option. Their sweet flavor makes it easier for children to accept.

Black Walnut Tincture $12.50 - $20.00

Black Walnut Tincture - A strong antifungal and antiparasitic. This can be used for thrush, painted on the mother's nipples and inside the baby's mouth. It can also be used internally for systemic yeast infections and internal parasites. This tincture can also be applied topically to athlete's foot, finger or toenail fungus, and ringworm.

CAUTION: Occasional references caution against the use of this herb while breastfeeding, stating that it may decrease milk supply. If using internally while breastfeeding, use with caution and keep an eye out for signs of decreased supply.

St. John's Wort Tincture - Clinical trials have found that St. John's Wort is as effective as pharmaceutical antidepressants for treating mild to moderate depression, without the unpleasant side effects. Other uses include anxiety and insomnia. It has also shown antiviral activity against HIV, Herpes virus, Hepatitis B and C, parainfluenza 3, and other viruses. Also noteworthy is its wonderful effectiveness in healing damaged tissue, wounds, burns, scars, and stomach ulcers.

If using to help treat depression, one should allow at least 2-3 weeks for it to be effective, and do not take if you are currently taking any other antidepressant medications without first consulting your health care provider. There is also a possibility of St. John's Wort interfering with the effectiveness of hormonal birth control methods.
